The Red Pavilion Jazz Band
is the resident ensemble of The Red Pavilion, performing every Friday night with a unique repertoire of Chinese popular music from the 1920s through the 1960s. Led by trumpet player Gordon Au and fronted by vocalist Malaya Sol, the band brings the sounds of a bygone era into the present, reintroducing classic melodies to new audiences.
Rooted in tradition and guided by thoughtful interpretation, The Red Pavilion Jazz Band offers an intimate journey through the golden age of Chinese jazz, inviting listeners to rediscover a world both distant and deeply resonant.

Their themed programs highlight different facets of this rich musical history: Mandarin Mambo explores the fusion of Latin rhythms with vintage Chinese jazz; Chinatown Jazz Noir evokes the intrigue and romance of America’s historic Chinatowns; and Shanghai Vice delves into the sultry jazz and blues of 1930s Shanghai—then known as “the wickedest city in the world”—where East met West in a heady mix of sound, scandal, and cinematic allure.
